Martensite in Steels
نویسنده
چکیده
The name martensite is after the German scientist Martens. It was used originally to describe the hard microconstituent found in quenched steels. Martensite remains of the greatest technological importance in steels where it can confer an outstanding combination of strength (> 3500MPa) and toughness (> 200MPam 1 2 ). Many materials other than steel are now known to exhibit the same type of solid-state phase transformation, known as a martensitic transformation, frequently also called a shear or displacive transformation. Martensite occurs in, for example, nonferrous alloys, pure metals, ceramics, minerals, inorganic compounds, solidified gases and polymers (Table 1). We shall review first the experimental facts about martensite and then proceed to explain them.

Crystallographic Analysis of Lath Martensite in Ferrite-Martensite Dual Phase Steel Sheet Annealed after Cold-Rolling
The martensite steels produced by quenching and tempering has been used for machine structural use. Martensite in ferrite-martensite dual-phase steels (hereinafter, DP steels) also has important roll in strengthening of the automobile steel sheets. Therefore the importance of analyzing the microstructure and their mechanical properties of the martensite has been increased year by year. Many res...
متن کاملStability of martensite with pulsed electric current in dual-phase steels
Softening frequently occurs in dual-phase steels under isothermal tempering of martensite. Recently, non-isothermal tempering is implemented to decrease the softening process in dualphase steels. Here, we have discovered using high power electropulsing treatment can significantly enhance the strengthening effects via the formation of ultrafine-grained ferrite with nano-cementite particles in te...
متن کاملColor metallography; a suitable method for characterization of martensite and bainite in multiphase steels
Color metallography is a useful method for characterizing microstructures of steels with multiple phases. In this paper, application of three different color etching techniques for a bainitic-martensitic steel is reported. Comparisons between the results showed that 10% Na2S2O5 aqueous solution was the best etchant for distinguishing martensite, bainite and ferr...
متن کاملY Studies on Austenitic Stainless Steels
Abstract--In this investigation, the fracture surfaces of SS 304 and SS 316 austenitic steels were analysed using the X-ray fractography technique. In both cases, a decrease in the austenite content was observed at the fracture surface as a result of deformation induced martensite, indicating a linear relation with Km~ within the stable crack growth region. The presence of this martensite was f...
متن کاملTRIP-assisted steels: cracking of high-carbon martensite
Modern TRIP assisted steels contain retained austenite with carbon concentrations in excess of 1 wt-%. Some of their mechanical properties, in particular the toughness and ductility, rely on the diffusionless transformation of this austenite into high-carbon martensite, induced by stress and strain. The properties can be excellent in spite of the fact that freshly formed high-carbon martensite ...
